NATO exists to keep people safe. For 70 years, the Alliance has provided a venue for international cooperation and prevented another world war. Jamie Shea, former Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Emerging Security Challenges, explains why we need NATO.
Before NATO, most security alliances were short-lived and uncertain, and the threat of war was always present. But over the past 70 years, the Alliance has changed the way that nations think about their defence. By bringing together 29 Allies, NATO has provided a guarantee of collective security—including against modern threats like terrorism and cyber attacks.
